Description:

Zuev V. from the village of Mstera is the artist who painted this composition featuring the Miracle of Saint George and the Dragon. This portrayal of one of the most loved saints in Russian Orthodoxy, is one of the most famous scenes to be painted as an icon. Saint George is one of the most honorable saints in Russia who accomplished many feats for the glory of Jesus Christ. There are many different legends connected with the name of Saint George. According to one of them Saint George killed the dragon and saved the Princess. This legend is often interpreted allegorically: the Princess denotes church, and the dragon denotes heathenism. St. George is the protector of cattle breeding and agriculture. Since Dmitry Donskoy time, the image of St. George, riding a horse and killing the dragon with his spear, is depicted on the coat of arms of Moscow.
The composition is painted in iconic style with traditional egg-tempera paint that has been used to paint icons for centuries. The paint taken from the artist's palette is bright and very lively. Gold paint is used to detail and highlight the composition, which makes even more light shine off the box.
The scene is framed with a thick band painted in green tempera paints, whereas the sides of the box are decorated with beautiful gold filigree designs.
The box is constructed out of lightweight paper-mache that is strong and durable. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece and red lacquer to paint the interior. The box is hinged and rests on four legs. The artist wrote Mstera, and his name on the bottom of the box.
