Description:

This small round box is an original artwork of the talented Mstera artist Daniil Molodkin. Daniil is a very creative artist who tries like many young modern lacquer miniature painters to widen the boundaries of Russian traditional schools of lacquer miniature art. His fresh view on the world and the lacquer miniature art that he spins into every one of his works, is a marvelous portrayal of not only his creativity, but of his desire to show a wonderful world generated by his own fantasy. This work continues the artist's series of works showing fantastic creatures, gnomes and dwarfs, living in a downsized grass world. Here Daniil has chosen to depict the gnome-scientist. He reads strange hieroglyphs painted on the stone. May be the text he reads tells about aliens, because in the end of the text the space ship is depicted.
To paint this work the artist has used the usual for his works pallet filled with greens, blues and reds used for reproduction of the landscape; and yellows used for depiction of the sky. Gold paints are used to detail the gnome's costume, the plants and the insects.
The edges of the lid and the box's sides are decorated with beautiful gold floral patterns. The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box isn't hinged and rests on a small platform. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title ("Gramotei", this word can be translated into Russian like "one who can read and write"), and the village of Mstera.
