Description:

This colorful box was painted by Sosin Piotr from the village of Mstera. It depicts the legendary Bogatyr warrior known as Dobrynya Nikitich. He is known primarily for his dramatic battles with dragons. Here we can see the feast arranged in the palace of Prince Vladimir to celebrate the victory won by Dobrynya over the damned Dragon (the dragon is painted in the left upper part of the composition). All citizens of Kiev thank the bogatyr for his feat.
The painting within the scene is exceptional. The design is medieval and the colors are fascinating. Bright red-orange, rich blue, soothing green and a myriad of earth tones make up the artist's palette. Gold and aluminum paints add details to the scene.
The edges of the lid, and the box's sides are decorated with elegantly painted gold and aluminum designs. The box is constructed from paper-mache made. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while a lively red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed and titled by the artist.
