Description:

This interesting work has been created by Piotr Sosin from the village of Mstera. It's called "Let's sit before the long journey", and shows several cosmonauts getting ready for the space flight. The engineers depicted nearby check the running of all engines and apparatus of the sky-rocket. In the background the artist has painted the symbols of Moscow, the Kremlin and the Ostankinskya Bashnya (The TV Skyscraper in Ostankino district of Moscow), together with different plants and factories. Such themes were very popular during the Soviet era and you can find the similar boxes in every catalogue dedicated to the history of Russian lacquer art. These boxes and his own remembrances of the Soviet epoch inspired the artist to create this magnificent box.
The composition is very busy without being overly crowded. The deep black of the background enhances all of the other colors, especially the yellows and oranges. Sosin uses light gold and shimmering aluminum paint to contour multiple areas within the scene. These contours twinkle beautifully decorating the scene.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge has been fastened to the left of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The lid's artistry is framed with golden filigree accentuated with slivers of aluminum designs. A thin line of aluminum minute bead work can also be found here. All four sides have been decorated with a larger version of this design. The work is signed by the artist.
