The work is called "Winter Outdoors", and depicts a scene from peasant life. Winter has come into the village, and the peasants have busied themselves with activity that corresponds to the chosen season. Winter is the time of sevral holidays--Christmas,pan-cake week, New Years.
There is ample depth and expression within the composition. The close-ups are close and the distance is far. It takes great talent to complete this type of work. A wide variety of greens and blues, which intermingle with lavender, awaken the fantasy of the scene. Golden contours outline portions of the designs on the character's clothes, the plants and the leaves of several of the trees. Gold foliage pattern frame the scene and the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box.The box is not hinged for ease of opening. The box rests on a four small round legs. The work is signed, and titled by the artist on the inside of the lid.
