Description:

In the middle of summer Russian peasants start to procure hay for winter. During the hottest summer days they work hard in the fields and meadows because they are pressed for time. In August grass and plants become dry and torrid. Mowing is a very important time in Russian agriculture.
Vladimir Molodkin of Mstera is the artist who painted this scene. He is not only a great master artist, he is also the father and mentor of his three sons, Daniil,Denis and Nikolay, who are also Mstera artists. The legacy the Molodkin family is crafting will remain on Mstera soil, and in the minds and hearts of the lacquer art world for many generations. His creative approach with his palette and the simplicity in which his paintings come out of his brushes shows his greatness. His style is not forced, it just flows. He brings his personality out in every painting he creates, which is more important than having the best technique or the greatest ideas. But by having impeccable technical skills and a mind full of fresh ideas the paintings he makes are some of the brightest and intimate in the lacquer art world.
The palette is filled to the brim with pastels that can show the warmth of summer. Molodkin uses gold paint in subtle amounts to enhance the detailing throughout the scene.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Gold ornamentation frames the scene on the lid and wraps around the sides of the box. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on four feet. The work is signed with the artist's name, Mstera and the title -"Mowing time".
