Description:

This colorful box has been painted by the Mstera artist Antonina Medvedeva. Her original works are much in demand by collectors. Here the artist has chosen to depict a scene from the Russian fairy-tale “Geese and Swans”. This tale is about a little boy, Ivanushka, who was kidnapped by the wicked birds, Geese and Swans, by the order of Baba-Yaga. The boy's sister, Alyonushka, started searching for her brother, and found him in Baba-Yaga's house. Later the children could successfully escape from that place, but Geese and Swans began pursuing them. Only with the help of the Apple-Tree, the River and the Stove, the children were saved.
Besides the main characters of the fairy-tale the composition is filled with a great number of minor details including various animals, birds, plants, trees, and mushrooms.
The box's sides are decorated with rich gold ornaments detailed with brown tempera paints. In the middle of the front side the artist has painted Baba-Yaga's house, while on the box's left and right sides she has drawn Geese and Swans.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition, and rests on four legs. The work is signed with the name of the artist, the village of Mstera and the title.
