Description:

Tatyana Strunina, a daughter of the outstanding Mstera master Piotr Strunin, is the artist who painted this box. The composition depicts different scenes from the famous fairytale "Tale of the Golden Cockerel," written by the Great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. The left part of the composition shows the beautiful Queen of Shemakha standing inside the eastern tent and alluring Tsar Dadon. The right part of the composition depicts Tsar Dadon breaking his promise to fulfill any of the Astrologer's wishes. The Astrologer wants to receive the Queen of Shemakha and Tsar Dadon again shows his indulgence by refusing to keep his word.
Most of the composition is painted in grey, brown and light blue tones of tempera paints. Gold paint is used to accent various details including the architecture and the armor of the warriors. Gold is also used to decorate the box's exterior with beautiful patterns.
The box is made out of paper-mache made. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on four carved feet. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title and the village of Mstera.
