Description:

Daniil Molodkin from Mstera painted this exceptional box. Daniil is one of the most popular Russian lacquer artists in North America. The fresh view on the world that he spins into every one of his works, is a marvelous portrayal of not only his creativity, but of his desire to make the world a more beautiful place. He shows us a side of this world that is below our feet. In the grasses there are innumerable insects and tiny animals doing things we never see. By painting them, and fictional grasspeople into an enlarged grassy setting, he provides his audience a twist or curve in logical thinking. This forces us to reexamine how we look at things everyday, which we take for granted: like a large grassy field.
This work continues the artist's series of works showing fantastic creatures, living in a downsized grass world. These creatures, gnomes and dwarfs, have towns, villages, markets, shops, ports and libraries. Here the artist has depicted the seller of fish who sells fish to another dwarf. The multicolored fish fly in the air like butterflies tied to the end of a stick. The customer hands the seller the bag filled with coins. All around them extends the fantastic world with its yellow sky, bright whimsical plants and different insects. The clothes of the gnomes are expertly detailed with a wide variety of flowered and geometric designs. Each fish is painted to look very authentic, but original at the same time. The scene is very bright and colorful. Blue and red tones dominate the center of the composition, while earth tones define its periphery. Gold paint is used with great care and precision in the composition. The application of the gold is very well done, and only enhances the flair of the box without overpowering the eye.
Gold and aluminum ornamentation frames the composition and wraps around the sides of the box. Both designs are similar, with the one around the sides being larger, and have the same level of acute intricacy that can be found in the composition.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left side of the composition, and the box sits on four small legs. The artist's signature and title can be found right underneath of composition. This is a festive and light-hearted piece by a young and talented artist!
