Description:

The author of this electric composition, Yuri Vavanov, attended the Mstera Vocational Art School from 1951-1955, where he studied under E. Zonina. He began working at the Proletarian Art Factory in the same year as his graduation, and became a member of the USSR Union of Artist in 1965. He is a living legend in the world of lacquer art, and his inspiring mastery displayed here explains why. Works by Vavanov have been featured in almost all catalogues on lacquer miniature painting.
Anyone looking to buy a great original lacquer piece should seize the opportunity to own this breathtaking work of art. It is abundant in spirit, color and imagery, and at every viewing something new is revealed. The timeless beauty of Vavanov's work will bring joy for generations to come.
This box is based on the story of, "The Unsmiling Princess." She had everything she could ever want, but never laughed or smiled. The king was concerned for his daughter, and wanted her to know joy. He offered her hand in marriage to whomever could make her smile, so that she would know a lifetime of happiness. People came from all over the land. Peasants, and nobles, farmers and merchants all tried, but to no avail. Our scene shows all citizens of the kingdom trying to make the Princess laugh.
To create this scene, Vavanov chose orange, red and brown shades of egg-tempera paint as the base colors for his composition. The scene is framed with rich patterns painted with tempera paints. These patterns show different figures including flowers, birds, and steeds. The edges of the lid are framed with golden patterns. The sides of the box are decorated with complex patterns painted in gold and tempera paints. The box is constructed from paper-mache made. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while a lively red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed by the artist.
