Description:

This exquisite piece was created by famous Mstera artist Vladimir Moshkovich. Moshkovich built a well established career as a Mstera lacquer box artist that has won him many state awards and honors. In addition, his name is mentioned in almost every art book on Mstera.
The composition shows the town of St. Petersburg, and it is entitled "The three-hundredth anniversary of the town erected in the heavens." Apostle Peter and the founder of the town, Peter the Great, move the clouds aside and the beautiful panorama of St. Petersburg opens up before the viewer's eyes. Here the artist managed to depict almost all main sights of the town: St. Isaac's Cathedral, the Savior on the Blood Cathedral, the Winter Palace which today is referred to as the Hermitage, the Rostral Columns, the Stock Exchange, the statue of Peter the Great, the Admiralty Spire, the St. Peter and Paul Fortress and many other monuments. Two angels depicted in the center hold the coat of arms of St. Petersburg, whereas Apostle Peter holds the keys to open the town's gates. At the bottom of the composition the artist depicts the Fleet of Peter the Great that is one of his creations.
Each piece of architecture is painted with precise detail. Soothing colors of baby blue, deep blue, bright yellow, red, orange, olive and ochre dominate the majority of the palette. Gold is used to paint the halo over the Apostil's head and over the angels' heads, and also highlight the cupolas of some cathedrals.
The composition is framed with a gold line, which runs parallel to the beautiful band of floral patterns painted in tempera paints and highlighted with gold. The edges of the lid are decorated with gold beads. The sides of the box are decorated with elegant gold and aluminum ornamentation and with another string of gold beads.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition and the box rests upon four feet. The artist has signed his name, the title and the village name of Mstera along the bottom of the composition in gold paint
