Description:

Mstera master Anatoliy Shirokov has depicted a version of one of the most popular Russian fairy-tales. "Snegurochka," otherwise known as "The Snowmaiden." The composition is originally designed. It is separated into three parts painted in the form of arches. The left arch features the Snowmaiden walking in the forest and her parents, Fairy Spring and Father Frost. The middle arch shows the shepherd, Lel, playing his flute and the girls standing enchanted by his music. The right arch shows the Snowmaiden's suitor, Mizgir.
The composition is filled with details including different plant life, animals, birds and architecture. Pale blues and an olive based compilation of earth tones dominate the lid's artistry. Shirokov is a master of layering and this is reflected through the texture of the landscape and the leaves of the tress. Gold and aluminum paints are used to detail the scene. In the upper part of the composition the artist depicts two siren birds. One of them holds the paper where the song of Lel is written:
God grant light,
the warm sun.
Our red sun,
Nothing in the world is more beautiful.
Warm weather, fertile summer."
The artist also continues to paint the forest and the birds that inhabit it on the all four sides of the box and also on the underside of the box. The lid's artistry and the box's sides are also adorned with decorative patterns painted in gold and aluminum.
The box is constructed from paper-mache made in the village of Mstera. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. A hinge has been fastened along the top of the composition and the box rests on four legs. The artist titled all three parts of the composition. The left parts is entitled as "Snowmaiden", the middle part is entitled "Lel's Song. The Fairy-Tale
