Description:

This enchanting piece of Russian lacquer artistry was created through the exceptional talents of Elena Yevdokimova of Mstera. Her ability to compose freshly detailed animation is second to none. Colors that dance among themselves. Decoration that is purely splendid. Collectible treasures.
Yevdokimova is interested with the theme of fairy-tales both of Russian origin and of Western part of the world. Here she composes a scene from the children's classic tale of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". Many lacquer miniaturists frequently depict scenes from the Russian version of the story entitled, "The Dead Princess and the Seven Bogatyrs."
The Snow White has just been cast off into the forest, deep into the dark woods, and she has nowhere to turn. After walking quite a ways she comes upon a group of small men who are getting ready to go to work. When they leave she will go in their home, cook, clean, and fall asleep until they get home. When they do return, they will wonder why their home is so immaculate, but figure it out when they see who is sleeping in their home. So now eight people live in the small home deep in the woods, but their peace will only be fleeting as Snow White will eat an apple, poisoned by the one who sent her in the forest to die in the first place.
The front side of the box features the Snow White sitting on the bed inside the dwarfs' home surrounded with her friends, all seven dwarfs. The left side of the box shows the Snow White strolling in the forest accompanied by animals while in the right background the dwarfs mine diamonds, and in the left background the wicked sorceress asks her magic mirror who is the most beautiful woman in the world. When she finds out that the most beautiful woman is not she, but the Snow White, she decides to kill the girl. The right side of the box shows the wicked sorceress dressed like a beggar, giving the poisoned apple to the Snow White. In the background the suitor of Snow White rides his steed trying to find his darling. The rear side of the box depicts seven dwarfs riding forest deer trying to prevent Snow White (she is depicted in the background) from eating the poisoned apple. The lid shows the happy end of the tale: the Snow White is saved by his suitor who hugs her tenderly, and the loving couple is surrounded with all seven dwarfs.
The artist's palette is very bright and each color is able to bring its own quality to the scenes, making this a very dynamic painting. The linear movement in each scene is fluid and the artist is able to make the most out of the limited area on the box. Each scene is painted in the icon painting style that allows her to distort spatial and temporal normalities. In doing this she creates balance between the characters, landscape, and architecture to bring a tremendous aesthetic to the piece.
The decoration will excite you. The four slanted sides of the lid are painted with flowered patterns of golden filigree among red and aluminum wild flowers as their centers. Poetry of the brush. The lower edge of the lid is patterned with wave-like golden scrollwork sprinkled with aluminum. The same pattern decorates the slanted edge of the base.
The box is constructed from paper-mache made. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while a radiant red lacquer is used to complete the interior of the piece. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition, and the box rests upon four feet carved as a portion of the base. The work is signed and titled by the artist on the base of the box.
