Description:

Daniil Molodkin of Mstera not only has great artistic skills, but has an imagination teeming with fantasy filled thoughts. His work has found itself in the hands of many international collectors and his popularity is growing fast. He does not limit himself to painting themes from Russian tales, rather he makes up his own scenes from tales that exist in his head, and Russofies them so they fit in the Russian lacquer art genre.
The work is called "The Rare Bird", and features two dwarfs and the expressively painted bird that reminds the bird of pelican. The owner of the bird is the dwarf dressed in the red shirt that is painted in the center. He holds the cord tied to the bird's collar. The bird has laid eggs, and the second dwarf has come here to buy them. May be he is going to breed this rare class of birds.
Greens and blues make up a majority of the palette, that is very bold and brightly portrays the action in the scene. The grasses in the background rise and wind to the top of the composition against a light green background. Each stem and leaf seems to have its own place in the background, and with the incorporation of the beetles the artist shows how much he had to magnify this scene for us. Gold is used to detail and outline key areas of the composition, which brings out a spark that enhances the surrounding colors.
The scene is framed with a thin gold line. The sides of the box are decorated with two parallel bands of gold foliage patterns.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The artist's name, the village of Mstera, the year of 2005 and the title ("The Rare Bird") can be found on the exterior bottom of the box.
