Description:

Nikolay Molodkin of Mstera is the artist who painted this colorful box. He comes from the family of the outstanding Mstera artists. The name of his father, Vladimir Molodkin, is familiar to any lacquer miniature enthusiast. His brothers, Denis and Danilo Molodkin, are very talented and popular artists. This splendid work proves that Nikolay is as talented as his relatives, and has his peculiar painting style.
The work is called "As in the Old Fairy Tale". It is the artist's fantasy on the theme of Russian and European fairy-tales. Only in fairy-tales we can come across dragons that fly in the sky just like planes (it was a very interesting decision to paint the dragon and the plane together, see the right upper corner), the winged dogs, the flying ships, and many other wonders. This fantastic world attracts and fascinates us.
Molodkin has perfectly combined shades of blue, brown and yellow to create a stunning atmosphere of a sunny day. Gold paints have been used to detail the scene. The faces of the people in the painting are detailed and expressive.
The composition is outlined with a gold line, and then framed by a detailed floral design painted in gold paints. Beautiful gold and aluminum ornamentation also wraps around the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. A hinge has been fastened along the top of the composition and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed, dated (2006) and titled by the author.
