Description:

This work is painted by one of Molodkin brothers, Nikolay Molodkin. He is the youngest in the Molodkin's family. With each his new work he proves that he is no less talented than his prominent relatives.
The box depicts the famous battle of Borodino described by M.Yu. Lermontov in his poem "Borodino". It took place on the 7th of September, 1812, near the village of Borodino, west from the town of Mozhaisk. It was the largest and bloodiest single-day battle of the Napoleonic Wars, involving more than a quarter of a million soldiers. It was fought by the French Army under Napoleon I and the Russian Army of Alexander I. Owing to the talent of Russian commanders and selfless courage of Russian soldiers, the Russian army defeated the Napoleon's troops. This battle was a turning point in the war of 1812 that advanced the glorious victory of the Russian army over the French invaders.
The composition painted on the box's lid features the beginning of Lermontov's poem when young people ask the old soldier to tell them about the Borodino battle.

"But tell me, uncle, why our men
Let Moscow burn, yet fought again
To drive the French away?
I hear it was a dreadful fight,
A bitter war, by day and night;
That's why we celebrate the might
Of Borodino today."

The composition painted on the front side of the box shows the battle between the Russian and French armies. On the left there is a figure of Napoleon I and nearby his army is depicted. On the right we can see the Russian army, and the figure of Alexander I. In the middle the artist depicted the main heroes of the battle
