Description:

Vladimir Molodkin of Mstera is the artist who painted this box. He is not only a great master artist, he is also the father and mentor of his sons, Daniil, Nikolay and Denis, who are also Mstera artists. The legacy the Molodkin family will remain on Mstera soil, and in the minds and hearts of the lacquer art world for many generations.
The box depicts an episode from the Moses's second book called "The Book of Exodus". This book centers on a man named Moses, who is an Israelite. Moses was born in Egypt under the slavery. One day, God came to Moses and told him that he was to lead the people out of bondage. Moses was a skeptic, but through a series of miracles, God convinced him to do it. Of course Pharaoh did not want to lose his entire workforce, so he refused to let the people go. Through a series of ten horrible plagues, however, he was convinced, and allowed the Israelites to leave. Soon after, he changed his mind and ordered his warriors to follow them. The Israelites were blocked by the Red Sea, but God parted the sea so that they could walk across. As soon as they were all across, the sea came crashing down on the Egyptian warriors, killing them.
The artist uses here a palette that is characteristic of his work. Warm browns, yellows and oranges are combined with cold blues and greens. Gold paints are used to enhance the details and bring out the true boldness of the palette.
The composition is outlined with a gold line, and then framed with the intricate gold pattern formed by interlaced scrolls and leaves. The similar gold ornamentation but a little bigger in size can be found wrapping around the box's sides. In the middle of the front side there is the following quotation from the Bible written in light blues, within the deep blue rectangle, adorned with golden stars: "
