Description:

Mstera is proud of Denis Molodkin. He is taking the Mstera style to new and exciting levels. Currently a teacher at the Mstera Art School, Denis Molodkin has developed a style for the fantastic. His father, Vladimir, and brothers, Nikolay and Daniil, are also wonderful painters that all of Mstera is looking to for inspiration and new ways to use Mstera's dynamic style.
The subject of this work is based on the Russian folk fairy-tale "Ivan Tsarevich and the Grey Wolf". It tells about the adventures of Prince Ivan and his friend, the Grey Wolf, a magician. The Wolf ate the horse of Ivan and to redress a wrong, he helped Ivan in several quests: to get the firebird, to get the horse with the golden mane, and to get the beautiful princess.
In the center of the composition Molodkin has painted the Grey Wolf stealing Elena the Beautiful for Prince Ivan. In the left upper corner we can see the magic tree covered with golden apples. This tree grew in the orchard of Ivan's father, and every night the fire bird was stealing the apples from it. The tsar ordered his three sons to catch the thief, and it was the beginning of this thrilling tale. The right bottom corner of the composition shows Ivan's envious brothers who killed Ivan in the end of the tale to capture his rich prey. Here we also can see the Raven who managed to raise Ivan from the dead with the help of Life and Dead Water.
The composition is painted in bright tempera paints. Gold paint is used to enhance various details. Gold metal leaf shines through the river, the trees, the crown of Elena the Beautiful, and also through the steed's mane and tail.
The scene is framed with a gold line. The box's sides are adorned with magnificent floral designs painted in gold metal and tempera paints.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes its interior. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, and the year of 2006.
