Description:

This splendid round box is a creation of A. Minin from the village of Mstera. It shows Baron Munchausen, the main character of Rudolf Erich Raspe's (1736-1794) famous literary creation "The Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchausen".
The artist depicted Baron Munchausen sitting at the table and smoking the pipe. All around him we can see some extracts of the stories invented by Munchausen including his flying on a cannon ball, and the cherry tree growing out of the stag's head. This scene is painted in grey, blue and brown tones; gold paint is used to detail the military costume of Baron Munchausen and paint the golden balls carried by the huge flies.
The scene is framed with gold beads. The box's sides are adorned with a wide gold band studded with innumerable number of tiny grey veins. This band is outlined with gold patterns drawn against the greenish-blue background. The band also includes the letter "M" painted in gold paints within the small silver square.
The box's exterior bottom is also framed with gold beads. In the middle of the exterior bottom there is a big letter "M" painted in greenish-blue tempera paints and outlined with gold beads. This "M" letter is drawn against the light grey background studded with tiny grey veins and vague blue spots.
The box's interior is red; this red area is covered with slightly visible checks and golden dots. The sides of the box's interior are covered with gold paint.
The box is made out of paper-mache. The lid isn't hinged. The work is signed, and titled by the artist.
