Description:

This magnificent work has been painted by Alexander Gaun from the village of Mstera. He is interested in depicting biblical subjects, and has already created a series of works based on this theme such as "Flood", "Exodus", "Gogotha", "Judas Treachery", etc. This is another box from this series. It shows an episode from chapter 11 of Moses's first book called "Genesis", and tells about the construction of the Babylon Tower, and a subsequent punishment of people for their vanity.
To paint this work Gaun has used his usual palette based on combination of red, brown and orange tones. Gold paint is used to paint the armor and the halos of the angels; and also to put emphasis on the quotes from chapter 11 written in the upper left and right corners of the composition.
The composition is framed with two parallel gold lines, while the box's sides are adorned with gold floral patterns.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left of the composition, and the box rests on four rounded legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title ("The Babylon Tower"), and the village of Mstera at the bottom of the composition.
