This work painted by the prominent Mstera artist Valentin Tikhomirov is called Rendezvous and Partings. Each of the box s sides including the lid features a romantic scene. On the lid the rendezvous of a merchant with a maid is painted, while on the sides we can see a gentleman strolling with a lady in the park (front side), the date of a hunter with a peasant girl (the rear side), the parting of a hussar with a maid (left side), and a noble man who rides in the carriage hastening to the ball to have a date with his lady-love (right side).
The box s exterior is decorated with Tikhomirov s signature patterns painted in gold metal, blue and olive tempera paints.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the piece. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist s name, Mstera and the title.
