Description:

Alexander Gaun is known as a brilliant Mstera artist who likes to paint his creations on the theme of religion. Alexander has a unique style of painting that is easy to recognize. It is a mixture of the classic Mstera style with the artist's personal innovative vision on the lacquer miniature art.
This large box shows various episodes surrounding the wonder of Jesus Christ's birth. The Christmas story is paraphrased from the New Testament Books of Matthew and Luke in the Bible.
To paint this work Gaun has used his usual palette based on combination of red, brown and orange tones. Gold paint is used to paint the armor of the soldiers, the halos of the saints, and also to detail the costumes of some characters.
The scenes are separated from each other by means of the band painted in mustard tempera paints and outlined with gold. The box's sides are adorned with a nice gold floral pattern.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left, and the box rests on four rounded legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title (“The Birth of Christ”), and the village of Mstera at the bottom of the scene.
