Description:

This colorful and lovable piece by popular Mstera artist Daniil Molodkin shows a recognizable scene from Lewis Carroll's classic tale “Alice in Wonderland”. Here he has painted Alice who can't get out of the White Rabbit's house. She has drunk a magic drink from the bottle. The drink now makes Alice grow so big that she blocks the entrance and the White Rabbit is no longer able to get into the house. The White Rabbit asks a lizard named Bill to get her out…
The artist has drawn here five characters from the tale including Alice, the White Rabbit, Bill the Lizard, the Cheshire Cat, the Caterpillar as well as various bugs and insects. Each of them is given his own personality, and dressed in his own unique costume. This creates an animated dynamic within the composition that enlivens the theme that this scene is based on.
The palette is full of vivid colors that are used to boldly render the setting and the characters within. Many tones from the spectrum are used, which creates a dynamic background and a visually appealing foreground. The gold not only pulls the eye closer to the composition, it helps bring out the true aesthetic nature of the combinations of color found in the scene.
The composition is outlined with a line of gold paint, and precise and tightly wound gold foliage pattern. Similar though expanded gold foliage pattern adorns the sides of the box.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. A hinge is fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Mstera, the title and the year of 2008.
