Description:

This big box is a splendid creation of Mikhail Strunin of Mstera. Its entire surface (except the exterior bottom) is covered with spectacular sights of old Moscow including the Moscow Kremlin and its surroundings. Working on this piece Strunin has used old paintings drawn in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The box's lid shows ladies and gentlemen strolling along the stone platform, and enjoying the panorama of Zamoskvorechye (the old Moscow region) from the side of the Moscow Kremlin. This scene was originally painted in 1797. The box's front side depicts the embankment of Moskva River, and an impressive panorama of the Moscow Kremlin built on its banks. On the left side Strunin has painted the famous Spasskaya Tower of the Moscow Kremlin while on the right side he has drawn Cathedral Square of the Moscow Kremlin. The rear side of the box depicts Kolomenskoe Village located not far from the center of Moskow.
Various tones of light brown, grey and green tempera pains help the artist to create an imitation of old paintings. Each scene is outlined with gold. The box's exterior is decorated with intricate gold ornaments accented with aluminum.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name and the title.
