This interesting box has been created by the youngest of Molodkin brothers, Nikolay Molodkin. He is a very talented artist whose works are as unique as the works of this father and brothers.
Here, we see a gathering of characters from Lewis Carroll's classic “Alice in Wonderland”. In the center of the composition we can see Alice travelling through the Wonderland. From the left of her the artist has painted various playing cards that symbolize inhabitants of the Wonderland. A little above Alice we can see the Cheshire Cat sitting on the tree. The left upper corner shows the Hat and the Hare having a tea party.
Blue, brown and grey tones of tempera paints predominate here. Alice's silhouette is painted against the lustrous gold background. Gold is also used to detail the composition throughout, but its application is subtly rendered so as to enhance the quality of the existing palette.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The composition is outlined with gold. Gold leafy ornamentation decorates the edges of the lid, and runs along the sides of the box. The box has a hinge to its left and rests on four rounded feet. The work is signed with the artist's name, Mstera, the title and the year of 2008.
