Description:

This work is painted by one of the talented Molodkin brothers, Nikolay Molodkin. He is the youngest in the Molodkin's family but he is as gifted as his father and brothers.
The originally shaped box shows several moments from the fairy tale, "Ruslan and Ludmilla." This story was originally written in free verse by the most famous of all Russian poets and writers, Alexander Pushkin in 1817. In the center of the composition the artist has painted Ruslan who is the main character of the tale. From the right of him the artist has painted the Giant Head, the evil wizard, Chernomor, and his captive, Lyudmila. From the left of the central scene we can see Ruslan's rivals, Rogdai and Ratmir, setting out in search of Lyudmila.
In this masterful Molodkin's composition, elements of icon painting, surrealism, and a great story are incorporated to make this an animated feast for the eyes. The palette is filled with the artist's favorite light blue, green, yellow and red tones. Gold paint is used to enhance details throughout the composition and to bring out a true richness to the scene.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with intricate gold foliage designs. A hinge has been fastened along the top of the composition and the box rests on legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, Mstera and the year of 2008.
