Description:

This magnificent box has been painted by Alexander Gaun from the village of Mstera.
On this composition the artist has painted the famous biblical subject of Jesus Christ's crucifixion. In the upper part of the composition Jesus Christ is crucified on a cross. The artist also depicts the citizens of Galilee who gathered here to see the execution. In the right bottom corner Judas is kissing Jesus. The left bottom corner features the famous biblical scene when Jesus Christ foretells that one of his pupils will betray him.
The composition is set vertically.
The coloring of the composition is typical for Gaun's painting style. It is based on harmonious combinations of three main colors: brown, red and yellow. Gold paint is used to detail the halo over Jesus Christ's head and to headline some other parts of the painting.
The composition is framed with two parallel gold lines, while the box's sides are decorated with beautiful gold floral ornamentation. The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge located from the left of the composition and rests on four legs.
The work is signed with the artist's name, the village of Mstera and the title "This human was the son of the God" at the bottom of the composition.
