Description:

Vladimir Molodkin of Mstera is the artist who painted this scene. He is not only a great Master, he is also the father and mentor of his three sons, Daniil, Denis, and Nikolay who are also well-known Mstera Masters! The legacy the Molodkins family is crafting will remain on Mstera soil, and in the minds and hearts of the lacquer art world for many generations. His creative approach with his palette and the simplicity in which his paintings come out of his brushes shows his greatness. His style is not forced, it just flows. He brings his personality out in every painting he creates, which is more important than having the best technique or the greatest ideas. But by having impeccable technical skills and a mind full of fresh ideas the paintings he makes are some of the brightest and intimate in the lacquer art world.
The work is called "The Spring Cares", and shows labor and rest of Russian peasantry. Some of the peasants do different work: they pasture cows, sow the grain, and plough the land, while another ones rest like the group of girls and lads singing to the accompaniment of the flute. In the center of the composition the artist depicts Spring in a girls embodiment on a beautiful horse in around flowers, richly painted over the gold.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while dark red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The scene is framed with a lovely golden filigree pattern, the sides of the box are also decorated with gold ornament. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on a four legs. The artist wrote his name, the title and the village name of Mstera on the front side of the box within the beautiful light green frame decorated with multicolored flowers.
