Description:

This festive five-sided casket has been painted by a well-known Mstera Master Alexander Dogadin. It depicts scenes from the Russian folk fairy-tale "Sadko".
The tale tells about the exciting adventures of a musician Sadko. Once during one of his voyages, he had to throw himself into the sea to appease the Sea Tsar. He came to the Sea Tsar's court, and played his gusli (a musical instrument), while the Sea Tsar danced, causing a great disturbance in the sea. As a result of it, ships were sinking, people were dying. Having realized it, Sadko stopped playing. This episode is also depicted on one of the sides.
To reproduce the atmosphere of underwater kingdom the artist uses the palette filled with different shades of blue paint. On other sides the colors are bright-yellow and red. All five compositions are complex and includes various details: thoroughly painted human figures, architecture, ships and many sea animals. Creativity and tradition are abundant. All compositions are framed with gold lines and then decorated with the original pattern painted in gold and other colors.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged and the box rests on a wavy platform. The artist has signed the box with the title "Sadko", the village of Mstera, and his name.
