Description:

This paper-mache plate is a creation of the famous Mstera's artist, Alexander Dogadin. The work is called "Mstera Market", and shows happy villagers of Mstera enjoying a merry fair arranged in the Mstera market. In the middle of the composition we can see the Monastery of the Epiphany situated in the village of Mstera that was the center of icon painting and gave birth to the art of Mstera lacquered miniature painting. The scene depicted above the central scene depicts the Icon of the Holy Trinity Icon. The rest three scenes show Mstera villagers having fun in the tavern "Three Carps" (the name of the tavern is written in the center of the composition, just above the central scene) and tavern is actually located in downtown Mstera.
To paint this work the artist has used a subtle palette of tempera paints. Various details are enhanced with brilliant gold paint. Each scene is separated from each other by intricate gold ornaments. The edges of the plate are also beautifully decorated with very neat gold designs.
The exterior of the plate that is free from painting is covered with dark blue lacquer. The plate has a loop to be hinged on the wall. Along the edges of the lid the artist has written the following phrase in Russian using gold paints: "Have fun people who have money, but those who have only pennies in their pockets can't do it". The piece is constructed from high grade paper-mache. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title and the village of Mstera.
