Description:

This enchanting piece was painted by a talented Mstera artist Khromova Irina.
This box shows a scene from the Russian fairy-tale "Kolobok".
Kolobok is the character of a fairy tale with the same name, represented as a small spherical being. It is casually created by the Old Man and his wife, as a bread dish, which suddenly becomes animated and escapes from home. The fairy tale plot describes Kolobok's repetitive meetings with various animals (a rabbit, a wolf and a bear) who intend to eat it, but Kolobok cunningly escapes. With each animal Kolobok begins a discussion, in which he explains his escape inductively: "I have escaped the Grandmother, I have escaped the Grandfather, and I will certainly escape you". The fox manages to catch it and eat it, on account of its (Kolobok's) vanity.
The artist used an almost every color in the spectrum to fill in the lively action taking place in the scene. Aluminum paint is used to enhance the already bold palette. When viewing a piece painted by an artist, such as this, you notice a certain air of dreamy light that radiates from within the composition.
The box's exterior is decorated with intricate gold ornamentation. The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left of the composition, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title and the village of Mstera.
