Description:

This stunning piece of authentic Russian artistry was created by talented Palekh artist D. Ogir. This composition has many flavors. The decorative elements of the presentation announce the artist's fascination with the tale along with his passion for the craft that depicts it. A true gem this is.
Here, we see a gathering of characters from Lewis Carroll's classic "Alice in Wonderland". The Rabbit, the Hat, and the Cheshire Cat sit at the table, while Alice observes them from above through a deep hole. Being at the real world, she casts a glance at the fantastic, fairy-tale world. The Hat tells Alice that the Time has taken offence and stopped; and now it will be always 5 o'clock. It is the time of afternoon snack in England, when English men usually drink tea. The Rabbit, dressed in dinner jacket, looks at the Hat attentively through his eye-glass, while the Cat dozes. Next to them there are the magic mushrooms that possess the power of changing a human's size. Under the chair on which the Hat sits there is a bottle of magic liquid with the attached note: "Drink me!". In the near background there is the clock with a clock dial that always shows the same time, while in the far background we can see the Tower, a symbol of Great Britain.
The artist uses a well-designed composition to display his exceptional talents. Alice located above symbolizes the real world, whereas the other characters located beneath symbolize the world of fantasy and imagination. There is a clear boundary between them.
The artist uses a wide spectrum of different color combinations to create the magic world of Wonderland. The palette is dominated by the shades of green, olive, brown, blue and grey. As customary with Palekh tradition, the black lacquer exterior also acts as the background for the scene. This feature enhances the characters and the setting in dramatic fashion. The details in the ground, and the facial features of all four characters are all expertly achieved. But, it is the abundant use of lively golden and silver contours that really makes this composition shine. With the help of gold and aluminum paints the artist builds texture in the leaves, and the hair of the characters, as well as creates fairy-tale luxury in their clothing. This work is a wonderland all its own!
The composition is framed with the elegant patterns painted in gold and aluminum. The sides of the box are adorned with the neatly detailed floral patterns also painted in gold and aluminum.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer was used to paint the exterior of the piece while a brilliant red lacquer completes the interior of the box. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition for ease of opening. The box is carved into a vertical rectangle with ruffled sides to the right and left, and a rounded side towards the compositional bottom, and rests on a small platform. It box is signed with the artist's name, village, title and year (2004).
