Description:

This Easter egg was painted by a Palekh artist whose name, unfortunately, we don't know. He hasn't signed his work and even hasn't written his initials. The egg shows the Blessed Virgin with a child. To paint the Blessed Virgin the artist uses dark crimson colors; whereas her child is painted in pink tones. Gold and aluminum paints detail their robes and gold is also used to paint their halos. This miniature is framed with a string of gold beads. At the backside of the egg the Russian Orthodox Cross is painted in gold. This area is also encircled with gold beads. Another areas of the egg and the pedestal on which it rests are decorated with complex patterns painted in gold and aluminum.
Very often Palekh, Mstera and Kholui artists paint icons, and this decision isn't influenced by a fashion or something else. The schools of Palekh, Kholui, and Mstera appeared under the influence of icon painting. After the Revolution icon painters couldn't paint icons anymore, and to preserve their artistic talents they had to master the new profession of a miniature-painter. So, it may be said that this piece continues traditions of icon painters who lived in Palekh a century ago.
The egg is made out of paper-mache, and covered with black lacquer.
