Description:

This beautiful winter scene was painted by A. Bokareva from the village of Palekh. It shows a fragment from the popular Russian fairy-tale "The Snowmaiden" or "Snegurochka" (Russian version of the title). Here the artist has chosen to depict the farewell of Snegurochka (she is depicted in the middle of the scene) with her parents. Snegurochka isn't a human being; she is the daughter of nature. Her parents, Faerie Spring and Mighty Winter, are depicted from the right from the Snowmaiden. The village people depicted in the right part of the composition are very surprised. The young and pretty girl suddenly appeared in their village. It seems that this girl is woven of snowflakes.
The composition is painted mostly in blue tons suitable for the reproduction of a winter scene. Aluminum paint creates the radiance of snow, and gold paint is used to add different details. The composition is complex. It includes nine human figures, winter landscape and architecture. Each human figure has its individual look.
The composition is framed with waving gold and aluminum pattern. The sides of the box are decorated with very beautiful and complex filigree designs painted in gold and aluminum.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top and the box rests on four legs. The artist wrote her name, the year of 2005 and the village name of Palekh along the bottom of the composition in gold paint.
