Description:

This traditional excellence was created by the talented Galina Mochalina from the village of Palekh. As customary with Palekh tradition, the black lacquer exterior also acts like the background for the scene. The colors and the artist's extensive use of lustrous gold contours, make this a feast for the eyes. The decorative elements of the presentation are very well organized, each line serving a new purpose.
Here Mochalina has chosen to depict an episode from the Pushkin's "The Tale of Tsar Saltan". It is the beginning of the tale when three sisters gossip among themselves as they spin wool. Each tells what she would do if she were to marry Tsar Saltan, the ruler of the kingdom, and available bachelor. They don't know that the tsar himself is standing behind them, overhearing their conversation. The youngest sister will soon become his bride because of her wise answer: "If I were the tsar's wife I would give birth to a charming child!"
The edges of the lid and the box's sides are decorated with beautiful gold and aluminum floral ornamentation.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box isn't hinged, and rests on four legs. The work is signed by the artist.
