Description:

This Palekh box painted by Peskova Irina features the most recognizable moment from Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Snow Queen". Kay was sledging down the ice-hill together with other children. Suddenly he saw the Snow Queen's luxuriant huge sledge pulled by magnificent white steeds. The Snow Queen whose festive attire was shining like diamonds offered the boy to take a ride inside her speedy sledge, the boy agreed, and nobody saw him since then.
The scene is painted in cool tones to reproduce a cold winter day. The details are enhanced by gold and aluminum paints. To create luminescence around the Snow Queen's figure the artist has used a gold metal leaf.
The scene is framed with a wavy gold line. The box's sides are decorated with more complex gold pattern completed with silver snowflakes. This ornamentation is accompanied by gold beads and another wavy gold line.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box is hinged from the left of the composition and rests on a flat bottom. Signed and dated (2006) by the artist.
