Description:

This beautiful piece of genuine Russian artistry was composed by the talented I. Peskova from the village of Palekh. It shows a recognizable moment from the timeless fairy tale of "Cinderella", or "Zolushka" (it is the Russian version of the tale). Cinderella dreams to dance at the ball arranged at the royal palace. But she has neither an elegant dress nor fashionable shoes, and that is why she can't even enter the palace. Fortunately, Cinderella's godmother, a kind fairy, presents the girl the ball-dress, the crystal shoes and the golden carriage. Now Cinderella is ready to attend a royal ball, but she doesn't know that this ball is organized to help the Prince to choose a bride.
Various shades of brown, red and green tempera paints have been chosen to paint this scene. Gold and aluminum paints are used to add minute details throughout the scene. Gold metal leaf creates a light source in the windows, details Cinderella's ball dress and reproduces a golden glow emanating from the gold carriage.
The scene is framed with a simple gold wavy pattern accompanied by a beautiful golden flower which is painted in each corner of the lid. On the box's sides Peskova has painted the sumptuous ornamentation of her original design. It is formed by interlaced flowers and leafs of a rose-bush. Lustrous gold metal leaf shines through large rose flowers, whereas leafs and rose flowers of a smaller size are painted in gold and aluminum paints.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged at the top, and the box rests on four rounded legs. Peskova signed and dated (2006) her work.
