This small Palekh box was painted by Natalya Latsuk from the village of Palekh. She is married to Palekh artist Evgeniy Tselikov that is why her manner of painting bears resemblance to the painting technique of her husband.
The box depicts an excellently painted lizard. Very, very minute elements of its body are precisely and finely drawn. That is why it looks strikingly realistic! The most laborious work has been done while painting the lizard's skin. But the result is astonishing. Subtle gradation of various shades builds its texture. Decorative appearance of the scene is completed with gold paint detailing of the lizard's body and surrounding plants.
The box's exterior is decorated with elegant gold patterns.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on a flat bottom. It is signed and dated (2006) by the artist.
