This traditional Palekh box has been painted by Nina Suloeva. Nina was born in 1948. During 1967-1972 she studied in the Palekh Art School. Since 1972 she has been working in the Palekh workshops.
The work is called "Summer Time", and shows the happy villagers enjoying a warm, sunny, summer day. In this work Suloeva has done a wonderful job in the development of texture. The leaves of the trees twinkle like the coins in a treasure chest. This is due to the consistent use of bubbling golden and silver contours. The characters' clothes have been highlighted in this manner as well. The greens, deep blues, oranges and reds give off new radiance because of these highlights. As a genre scene, this Russian lacquer miniature couldn't be more appealing.
An elegant ornament of gold filigree accented with silver paint frames the scene. The same ornament is repeated on the box's sides but it is a little bigger in size.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The exterior of the box is painted with black lacquer while the interior is completed with red lacquer. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title and the village of Palekh.
