Description:

This adorable box that shows a scene from Lewis Carroll's popular tale “Alice in Wonderland” has been drawn by the exceptional Palekh artist, Marina Denisenko.
Denisenko uses a well-designed composition to display her exceptional talents. Alice is positioned in the middle, and her red dress immediately catches the eye. The girl speaks to the Cheshire Cat who sits on the tree. To the left of the central scene we can see the White Rabbit who stands on the square in front of the Queen's palace, and invites everybody to play cricket. To the right of the central scene the artist has drawn the White Rabbit who hastens to meet with the Duchess.
As customary with Palekh tradition, the black lacquer exterior also acts as the background for the scene. This feature enhances the characters and the setting in dramatic fashion. The details in the ground, the tree of the Cheshire Cat and the facial features of all four characters are all expertly achieved. But, it is the abundant use of lively golden contours that really makes this composition shine. This gold builds texture in the leaves and flowers, and fairy-tale luxury in the clothing of the characters. Denisenko's work is a wonderland all its own.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while radiant red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box's exterior is decorated with simple gold ornaments. A hinge is fastened to the top of the composition for ease of opening, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed by the artist.
