Sergey and Maria Gurilyev are the artists who painted this scene. They are husband and wife, live in Palekh, and have made a name for themselves by painting together. Their works are as easy to recognize and their talents are easy to fall in love with.
The box shows a scene from the beloved children's book "The Little Prince" written by French author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The palette is very diverse and the paints are extremely bright. The artists apply the paint with precision and make the layers very thin. As customary with Palekh tradition, the black lacquer exterior also acts as the background for the scene. This creates a spectacular glow for the bright gold and aluminum contours. The precision used to craft those contours is a key indicator as to the Gurilyevs' brilliance.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box's exterior is decorated with very intricate gold designs. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the names of the artists, the year of 2005 and the village of Palekh.
