Description:

This traditional Palekh box has been created by Ivan Beketov. The work is painted on the theme of peasant everyday life, and shows several peasant women making sauerkraut. The depiction of peasant life is a very traditional scene that is commonly depicted in the Palekh style of lacquer miniatures. Scenes like this are very close to Palekh residents because Palekh produces their own bread, milk, cheese, sour cream, and butter.
The palette is based on earthtones that convey the sense of the raw, rural atmosphere. The black background provides separation of the sky and earth. Gold paint, and aluminum in lesser amounts, details a majority of the scene, which makes the details bring the scene to life.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Gold ornamentation accented with aluminum frames the scene, and another expanded pattern, also accented with aluminum, wraps around the sides of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh and the year of 2003.
