Description:

This attractive Palekh box has been painted by Ivan Beketov. For this work he has chosen the traditional theme of peasant everyday life that is commonly depicted in the Palekh style of lacquer miniatures. Here he depicts a peasant who has carried grain to the watermill.
The palette is based on earthtones that convey the sense of the raw, rural atmosphere. The black background provides separation of the sky and earth. Gold paint, and aluminum in lesser amounts, details a majority of the scene, which makes the details bring the scene to life.
The scene is framed with gold beads; gold beads can be also found wrapping around the bottom edge of the box's sides. The box's sides are decorated with an intricate, gold foliage pattern accented with aluminum.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the year of 2003 and the village of Palekh.
