Description:

Yevgenia (Zhenya) Shatokhina is the artist who painted the composition on this box. Yevgenia was born in 1972 in the town of Rybinsk, Yaroslavl Region. At present the artist currently lives in the village of Palekh, Ivanovo Region. In 1994 she finished the Palekh Art School. Her teachers were N.M. Smirnov and I.V. Beketov. She was awarded to the diploma of the Second Class by the Committee of Youth Affairs of Ivanovo Region. Her favorite subjects to depict are landscapes, fairy-tales by G.H. Anderson, Russian folk fairy-tales, themes of motherhood and lyric scenes.
The box continues the artist series of works dedicated to various forest spirits and shows two water nymphs taking a rest on the riverside, and speaking about something. Green tones of tempera paints predominate here because the action takes place in the forest. Gold is used throughout the scene to outline and detail, as is aluminum, which is mainly applied to create the movement in the water.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box's exterior is decorated with intricate gold ornaments accented with aluminum. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four feet. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, and the year of 2004.
