This attractive pencil box was painted by the talented Marina Populova from the village of Palekh. The theme of this work is based on a poetic fairy-tale “The Snowmaiden” or “Snegurochka”. Here we can see a dramatic moment from the tale when the Snowmaiden starts to melt under the merciless sunrays of Yarilo the Sun God before the amazed people of the Berendey Kingdom.
The drawing is a rich sea of details. The artist pays great attention to the summery green background, drawing countless trees, bushes and plants. Several traditional Russian wooden houses fit neatly in with the forest background. The characters are painted with a great accurancy ; their faces express different emotions.
Populova has made fine use of gold and aluminum paint within the scene. There is a treasure-like gleam within the water, the trees, the leaves even have a bit of an added dimension about them.
The pencil case is constructed out of high-grade paper-mache. The exterior of the piece is painted with black lacquer and interior is painted with red lacquer. The box's sides are decorated with a beautiful floral pattern painted in gold and aluminum. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the piece rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with Palekh and the artist's name.
