Description:

This beautiful box has been created by talented Palekh artist Yevgenia (Zhenya) Shatokhina. It shows a scene from Pushkin's "Tale of Tsar Saltan". Here we can see a wonderful transfiguration of Princess Swan into the beautiful maiden. Pushkin describes this breathtaking moment in his tale in such a way:

… She charms all hearts away -
Brighter than the sun at noon,
She outshines the midnight moon;
In her braids, a crescent beams,
On her brow, a bright star gleams.
She herself is sweet of face,
Full of majesty and grace.

The scene is painted in bright tempera paints against the black background, and neatly detailed with gold and aluminum paint. Gold and aluminum is also used to decorate the box's exterior with intricate patterns.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid isn't hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, and the year of 2006.
