Kut'kin of Palekh is the artist who painted this traditional scene of speeding winter troika. A loving couple traverses the snow-covered expanses of Russian countryside sitting in the sledge pulled at high speed by three mighty horses. Tiny silver dots are drawn throughout the scene to imitate swirling snowflakes. Gold paint is used to detail the sledge, the characters' costumes and the horses' harness.
The scene is framed with gold beads. The box's sides are decorated with more complex gold ornamentation accented with aluminum.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title (“Troika”), the year of 2006 and the village of Palekh.
