Description:

Akimova Inna is the artist who painted this marvelous Palekh box. She was born in 1962 in town of Kaluga, and later moved to the village of Palekh, where she has married to a talented Palekh Artist Sergey Kolesnik. Themes of her works are fairy-tales, genre scenes and folklore. Besides painting Akimova takes a great interest in music and works as a teacher in the Music School.
This Akimova's original work is painted on the theme of Russian circus. In the center she depicts a circus actor balancing on the big ball and trumpeting; the bear and the goat that stand on the small balconies are playing musical instruments; and the fairy steeds with slender legs and swan-like necks are dancing to the accompaniment of their music. The circus ring is very bright and adorned with a great number of various colorful ornaments and attractive details. The scene is painted against the black background that helps to reproduce the darkness where the audience is sitting. The subtle application of gold paint to the scene illuminates the box and adds detail, highlighting almost all aspects of the composition.
The edges of the lid are adorned with gold beads; the box's sides are decorated with more complex gold and aluminum floral design; gold beads can be also found wrapping around the bottom part of the box's body.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Red lacquer covers the interior of the box and black lacquer is used to paint the exterior. The box has a hinge from the left of the scene and rests on four legs. Signed with the artist's name, Palekh, and the year of 2007.
