This sumptuous box was painted by the famous Palekh artist, Mariya Gurileova. It shows a mother signing a lullaby to her little daughter sleeping in the cradle. The palette is very diverse but the predominance is given to green and blue tones of tempera pains. The detailing with the gold and aluminum is so fine that some of the lines are as fine as a hair and as small as a speck of dust.
The box is constructed out of high-quality paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box and red lacquer to paint the interior. The box's exterior is decorated with very intricate gold designs. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the name of the artist, the year of 2009 and the village of Palekh.
