Description:

Alexander Shemarov of Palekh is the artist who painted this winter scene.
It features peasant girls and lads making a snowman. The surrounding winter landscape is painted in blue and grey tones. Aluminum paint highlights the snow, while gold paint is used to detail every minute element of the scene.
The edges of the lid are adorned with a simple pattern composed of gold beads and the box's sides are adorned with golden ornament.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name and the village of Palekh.
